    Notes:

LUKEY -The family of Mr. Jim Lukey, of Sherbrooke Veteran's Village, Saskatoon, (and formerly of Watson), are saddened to announce his death at his residence on Friday, May 18, 2007. He was 90 years of age. Jim was born on the family farm near Norquay, on October 15, 1916, to Peter and Hanna (nee Chermyzie) Lukey. He grew up there and attended Westerland Country School near Norquay. At the age of 17, Jim began working with the Canadian National Railroad. In 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces and served with the 24th Regiment, Artillery, 9th Amphibious Force, in the Aleutian Islands. While on leave, Jim married Rose Twerdoclib in St. Phillip's R.C. Church near Kamsack on April 23, 1944. He was stationed in Ottawa until his discharge in February 1946. Jim then resumed his employment with the CNR, working in various Manitoba and Saskatchewan communities until 1958 when the Lukey family, which now included two sons and a daughter, moved to Watson. A year later a third son was born to them, thus completing their family of four. While living in Watson, Jim was Section Foreman with the CNR until retiring in 1975. A great fan of all sports, Jim was always on hand to cheer on his children and grandchildren whenever he was able, and even went to games when he didn't know any of the players. He was a long-time season ticket holder and strong supporter of the Humboldt Broncos. "Dad worked hard to make sure we wanted for little, so he had little time for recreation, but cards and visiting were frequently enjoyed. " He also enjoyed curling and bowling, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Royal Canadian Legion. Jim was very musically gifted and had a keen ear. In his early years, he had learned how to play violin, banjo, accordion and guitar and played in a band. In October 2005, Jim moved from Watson. Due to declining health, his last days were spent at Sherbrooke Veteran's Village in Saskatoon. Jim was very happy to be closer to his family and loved visitors. Jim will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren: Arthur Lukey of Vancouver, BC, and family, Tim (Pat) Lukey and Robert Lukey; Larry (Dianne) Lukey of Stony Plain, AB, and family, Trevor (Ann) Lukey and their children Emma and Spencer, and Melissa (Bob) Bezushko; Linda (Lorne) Binsfeld of Saskatoon and family, Clint (Corienne) Binsfeld and their children Jared and Amy, Ian Binsfeld, and Sarah Binsfeld; Ron (Heather) Lukey of Saskatoon and twins Rylee and Reid Lukey; his wife of 50 years, Rose (nee Twerdoclib) Lukey of Saskatoon; one brother, John Lukey of Lethbridge, AB; one sister, Nellie Long of Preeceville; three sisters-in-law: Anne Lukey of Canora; Margaret Lukey of Weyburn; and Ellen Lukey of Norquay; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim married Rose Helen Twerdoclib on 23 Apr 1944 in St Phillips RC Church, Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada. Rose (daughter of John Twerdoclib and Magdalena Rudachuk) was born on 5 Jan 1925 in Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada; died on 4 Jun 2020. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Rose Helen TwerdoclibRose Helen Twerdoclib was born on 5 Jan 1925 in Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada (daughter of John Twerdoclib and Magdalena Rudachuk); died on 4 Jun 2020.

    Notes:

On June 4, 2020 with family at her side, Mom passed away quietly and at peace with her life, ready to meet her God in Heaven. She enjoyed and appreciated all the visitations and phone calls from her family the last weeks of her life, in fact at one time she whispered "Did you ever think that maybe I'm faking it because I like all the visitors?!" She fully participated in her last rites, asked for a specific priest and even told us his address! That evening when she awoke, she whispered "I'm still here? I really thought (after last rites) I would go, I could just go" ... She was a phenomenal woman, an incredibly strong and independent woman and made her own decisions, right to the end. We are forever grateful she was able to pass away at home, as she wished.

Rose was born on the family farm southwest of Norquay, SK, the 7th of 13 children born to John & Magdalena (Rudachuk) Twerdolclib where she learned to give of her time and energy through her hard work. Living through the dirty 30's and the 40's wartime rationing, she knew the value of a dollar and how to grow, harvest, and cook the BEST food, especially her perogies, cabbage rolls and other Ukrainian delicacies!

Rose married Jim Lukey on April 23, 1944 and, because Dad's regiment was stationed there, off they went to Windsor, ON where Arthur, then Larry was born. After the war, they moved back to the prairies, living in various small Manitoba and Saskatchewan CNR towns and Linda was born during this time. Finally in 1958, the family settled in Watson, SK, where Ron was born. Raising a young family was challenging enough, but Mom managed to work outside the home as well, was a contributing member of the CWL and Watson Community Club, and for fun she curled, played cards and bingo.

Mom lived in Saskatoon for the last 25+ years of her life and continued her wonderfully active and happy lifestyle, fully participating and volunteering in her community, including at a seniors' care home well into her late 80's. She was very proud of her 60 year pin she received from the Catholic Women's League. Over the years she enjoyed a little travelling as well, including a trip to Spain when she was 85! She loved socializing, playing cards & bingo, knitting & crocheting, doing her ever present word puzzles, watching curling, and was an avid Toronto Blue Jay fan. Her family was her pride and joy and she helped each and every one of us in her own generous way, right up until early March, 2020 when she was hospitalized for a week, with a heart attack, She literally went from "95" to stop. Just as if she planned it. She always said she did not want to be a burden on anyone. She got her wish. Rest in peace, mama. WE LOVE YOU, WE WILL FOREVER MISS YOU.

Rose is survived by her 4 children: ARTHUR (Anita Ford) of North Vancouver, BC and his sons Timothy & Robert; LARRY (Dianne Lockhart) of Stony Plain, AB and their children Trevor (Ann Bradley) Emma & Spencer, and Melissa (Bob Bezushko) Kaz & Sam; LINDA (Lorne Binsfeld) of Saskatoon, SK and their children Clint (Corienne Gamola) Jared & Amy, Ian, Sarah (Jason Olaski) Jackson; RON (Heather Kreinke) of Saskatoon, SK and their children Reid & Rylee. She is also survived by 2 sisters Cecelia Dernisky (John, deceased) of Yorkton, SK and Anne Repzuk (Eddie, deceased) of Edmonton, AB, as well as many nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends.

Rose was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and by siblings Victor (Mary Ginetz), Mary (Bill) Woloschuk, Elizabeth (Ed) Sheluk, Violet, Albert (Pat Smith), William, Allan (Jean), Marian, Louise (John) Shanahan, Martin.

Karl and Maria Lukey packed her belongings, bringing with them their three younger children - Wasylena (17), Simon (14), and Andrew (8).
Making their way by a train, they first settled in Grandview, Manitoba, and lived there for four years. From Lawrence Huska page 6 - 7
After a short run from Winnipeg to Portage La Prairie, the family transferred to a different railway carrier, the CNR (Canadian Northern Railway), and covered the final distance to Grandview, Manitoba. There to the great joy of all, Paraska’s uncle, Kyrylo (Karl) Lukey (Кирило Лукій), and family welcomed them. It was now early June, about a week since their arrival in Halifax.

    The First Homestead
Kyrylo, b. 1849, and his wife Maria (Марія) came to Canada from Babyntsi, Galicia, in 1900 where he had been the village reeve or mayor (війтом), together with three of their children, Wasylyna (Васйлйна) (b.1884), Simon (Семен) (b.1885), and Andrew (Андрай) (b.1892). Their oldest child, Peter (Петро) (b. 1876), had immigrated to Canada earlier, in 1898. It was Peter’s letters to his parents back in Babyntsi extolling the virtues of Canada that convinced them to seek a better life in Canada. They settled on SE22-27-23-W1, near Venlaw, north of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba. And like most other immigrants, who had arrived in Canada, they had maintained contact with their relatives back in Babyntsi, which included Paraska and Roman. Although there were other Huskas settled in the Dauphin region, who were also from Babyntsi, it was Kyrylo and Maria who sponsored Roman, Paraska, George, and John. Because of the untenable conditions of their lives in Babyntsi and the favorable reports they had received by letter from the Lukeys in Venlaw, Roman and Paraska decided to join the flood of emigrants leaving Galicia in search of greener pastures in western Canada. The plan was that all would stay with the Lukeys until such time that the newcomers could establish themselves sufficiently to go it on their own. The 18 feet by 26 feet Lukey log house, typical of homesteaders’ residences, must have been extremely crowded with the addition of four adults and two small children to its confines.

Although a few settlers had taken out homesteads earlier, the great immigration swell did not arrive until after the completion of the Canadian Northern rail line to Grandview in December 1896. The Lukeys were part of that swell. The settlers continued to arrive in great numbers, occupying almost all the available land by the time that Roman and Paraska and the two young men arrived. The homesteads near the Lukeys were all taken. In fact, when the Lukeys arrived in 1900, the best land had already been taken. No doubt, this lead to hesitation on Kyrylo’s part to take out a homestead entry immediately. Instead the Lukey family squatted on what was the best quarter of a bad lot. However, under pressure from the local land office, Kyrylo filed his Entry for Homestead on June 21, 1901.

Karl married Maria (Mary) Oleksiuk(Andreychuk). Maria (daughter of Dmytro (Demetriu) Oleksiuk and Iryna (Irena) Byrka) was born in 1860 in Bldg 58, Babyntsi, Borodianka Raion, Kiev Oblast, Ukraine; died in 1941; was buried in St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, Norquay, Saskatchewan, Canada. Notes:

    Cobblestone research:

    OLEKSIUK
In the Registers, they wrote the surname in Latin as “Olexiuk”, “Oleksiuk” and even “Olexijow” and “Olexiow”. In the land documents 1820, they wrote “Olexow”. I will write “Oleksiuk”.
    5
I have managed to determine that the first of the kin was DMYTRO OLEKSIUK (Demetrius Oleksiuk). He was born in about 1836. He married Iryna Byrka (Irena Byrka). She was born in about 1835; she died 13.03.1889 at the age of 54. Dmytro died 4.05.1895 at the age of 59. They lived in Babyntsi in the building No 58.
In the land documents 1820, 3 Oleksiuk families lived in Babyntsi at that time: Oleksiuk Yuriy (No 57), Oleksiuk Stephan (No 58) and Oleksiuk Semen (No 61). Considering the building numbers, I assume that Stephan was the father or grandfather to Dmytro. Nevertheless, there are no Registers of the previous period to confirm/disprove it.
Dmytro and Iryna had at least 2 children:
OLEKSIUK HRYHORIY (Oleksiuk Gregorius) was born in about 1868. In 1889, he married Varvara Lukiy (please see the information above).
OLEKSIUK MARIA (Oleksiuk Maria) date of birth is unknown. She married Kyrylo Lukiy (please see the information above).

    Notes:
