Gloria was born on March 2, 1954 in Canora, SK to Paul and Rose Kindratsky. She grew up on a farm near Hyas, SK with her older brother Bernard and older sister Carol. She attended elementary school in Hyas and then completed high school in Norquay, SK. Gloria married Dale on May 17, 1975, and they settled in Saskatoon. She enjoyed working at the doctor’s office for 25 years before retiring in 2015. It was the perfect job for her because of her caring nature and dedication to the patients and her coworkers. She was fortunate enough to be able to take many trips with her husband, friends, and family and got to see many different tropical locations. Gloria was always easy to find in a crowd, you just had to listen for her laugh. She loved hosting and made her home into an inviting retreat with many activities for guests. Guests looked forward to her cooking, especially her homemade perogies, cabbage rolls, and scuffles. She was always warm, cheerful, and welcoming and enjoyed gardening, fishing, and bird-watching. Her kindness, patience, and caring ways always made you feel welcome and special. Her work ethic, wisdom, and willing spirit has been and will continue to be an inspiration to her family. She encouraged us to be the best we can be and was always proud of our accomplishments. She passed on the importance of honesty and integrity; and reminded us to always find strength in your faith. Above all, she loved her family. HULIAYETS
At the beginning of the 19th century, in Greek Catholic Registers, they wrote the surname as Huliay (Gulay in Latin). Then they added the ending “-yets”, and it became “Huliayets”. The ending “-yets” means belonging to some kin, in this case it means belonging to Huliay family. Therefore, I suppose that the original surname was “Huliay”, and then it was transformed into “Huliayets”. I will write “Huliayets”.

13 Life on the farm by Peter Yacyshen

For the Yacyshen Family Reunion 1993

Life on the Yacyshen farm was a happy one. I guess because there were so many brothers and sisters to do something foolish. Like the first to run barefooted in the spring with the snow on the ground or walk on thin ice without breaking through.

Our parents were good to all of us they tried their best. We did not appreciate all that they did for us until we were on our own.

When dad went to town with horses and wagon, I would go along. He would let me drive the horses. That was something great for me.

For entertainment we played ball, hide and seek, hit the can, or ride the buggy down the hill. In winter we would slide down the hill with homemade sleds, a piece of cardboard or a piece of tin.

These were hard times, no money for clothes. But we got something new for our Christmas concert.

The crops were poor and the prices were very low. One year it hailed and the next year about 1937 the rust wiped out all the crops. But our parents were religious and would never give up. They would always say that the good Lord had a reason for all his works.

We picked berries in the summertime, raspberries, strawberries, saskatoon’s and cranberries. We had to walk 3 or 4 miles to pick berries so we would stop at the farmers place along the way for a drink of water from the well. They were always friendly and would sit and visit. The berries were canned most of the time without sugar but they were sure good in the winter.

I just remember a few years of the hard time by 1940. The war years the times were good, we could get a dollar and a half for a can of cream. We milked 8 to 10 cows, so we had a few cents which made us rich after not having any money.

15 Lukey Family

In 1898 and ambitious young man immigrated to Canada, spending a year in this country and writing spirited letters to his parents. Peter convinced them to make the move around 1900. Karl and Maria Lukey packed her belongings, bringing with them their three younger children - Wasylena (17), Simon (14), and Andrew (8).
Making their way by a train, they first settled in Grandview, Manitoba, and lived there for four years. Finding the land that their dad homestead on too rocky, Peter and Simon decided to look for more suitable land. Two weeks of very exhaustive hunting and prospecting went by as they finally picked the site at Norquay.

The noble Laskowichs are faithful children to their Church, and devoted to the cause of the people. Their Silver Wedding [Anniversary] was not only a celebration with their family, who came from Norquay and the surrounding area, but also a rejoicing with their friends and acquaintances in Kamsack.

In the evening at the Parish Hall, ladies from the Women’s Fraternity [Society] prepared dinner and Reverend Fr. 36 Adolph (Penny) Panagabko
Adolph (Penny) Panagabko was born March 15, 1921 in Arran, SK to Nick and Mary Panagabko. They moved to Norquay in 1924, where the family settled and Adolph grew up, attended school and helped with the family business, “Norquay Harness and Shoe Repair Shop”.
Shortly after school, Adolph enlisted in the Army and spent close to 5 years overseas as a tank gunner fighting in several countries and a few historic battles including D- Day. This was a subject he never talked about with us.
After the war, he returned to Norquay and married Albina (Blondie) Kurtnik of Norquay. They opened a restaurant in Norquay called “Penny’s Inn”, a nickname Adolph got in the war because of his name and size. The restaurant business didn’t work out and Penny worked different jobs in the area until getting a position at the Norquay Post Office, where he worked until his retirement in 1986.
At the same time Penny started at the Post Office, he and his wife had two children, Pattie (McKaeff) and Mark, who they raised in Norquay.
Penny was active in his younger years with jockey, curling, church, and the Legion, where he was Sargent at Arms for many years and a life member.
He was a kind and loving man who was always willing to help a friend and he is missed very much.

37 After a brief, but incredibly courageous battle with cancer, Sidney “Syd” Lukey went to a place with no more pain or suffering on September 6, 2014. The only son of Matt and Mary Lukey (Tanasichuk), Syd was born in Grandview, MB on July 5, 1947 and spent most of his life living on the family farm north of town.
Syd attended Spruce Bluff School until he thought he was smarter than the teachers. When he was 15, Syd left home to work in construction. It was not many years later, that this tough, hard-working fellow caught the eye of Sandra Antoniuk and a four-year courtship began. They married on May 24, 1969 and raised their three children, Derrick, Kelly and Jody on a farm in Gilbert Plains MB. It was during this time that Syd bought his first backhoe and began his excavation business. In the summer of 1991, Syd and Sandra returned to the family farm in Grandview, and he began working for the RM, retiring in 2011.
Syd loved to be outdoors and took pleasure in most activities that were tied to nature. In his younger years, he loved to race snowmobiles, ride horses and hunt. Those passions didn’t change after his family arrived but were expanded to include camping, fishing and teaching his kids about nature and its animals. Syd loved nothing better than hooking up his horses and sleigh and taking his grandchildren for trail rides and family picnics at his beloved budha – a secluded oasis where he was well-known for being a gracious host. Syd also spent nearly every evening “patrolling” his land and the nearby Duck Mountain Provincial Park – his keen eye spotting a moose or deer a mile away. Syd loved animals and over the years his farm was home to horses, pigs, cows, pheasants, turkeys, chickens, cats and dogs.
Syd was a hardworking man, but played just as hard and loved to make people laugh. Despite his cantankerous disposition, Syd was a gentle giant (with VERY large hands) that instilled many values in his children and family. His family will honour his memory by following his simple rules of life: Be honest, work hard and don’t put up with anyone’s crap.
Syd was predeceased by his father in 1997, brother-in-law Joe Michaluk in 2013, father-in-law Steve Antoniuk in 1976, mother-in-law Lena in 1982, sister-in-law, Barb Demchuk in 1985 and brother-in-law Pete Demchuk in 1995.
He is survived by his mother Mary of Grandview MB, wife of 45 years, Sandra, son Derrick (Rhonda) Lukey of Swan River, MB and their children Shaelynn and Mackenzie, daughter Kelly (Cory) Brossart of Regina, SK and their sons Brayden and Carter, daughter Jody (Jeff) Danter of the Cayman Islands and their three daughters, Aleena, Kaija and Tessa. Also left to mourn are Syd’s seven sisters, Doris (Joe) Michaluk of Brandon MB, Nettie (Syd) Tycholis of Gilbert Plains MB, Vicky (Wes) Todoruk of Dauphin MB, Helen (Ron) Steele of Thunder Bay ON, Elsie (Don) McPhee of Dauphin MB, Donna (Randy) Rogers of Calmar AB and Kathy (Joe) Price of Souris MB, sister-in-law Joan (Orville) Citynski of Regina SK as well as a long list of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. 46 Bernie Ray Sliva
August 22, 1957 – June 24, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandpa, Bernie Ray Sliva.

Bernie was born on August 22, 1957, to Louis and Olga (Yachyshen) Sliva in Canora, SK. He passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, SK on June 24, 2024.

Bernie was raised on a family farm close to Rama, SK with his sister and two brothers. After completing high school in Sturgis, SK he was accepted into the University of Saskatchewan to pursue education in engineering. After deciding to join the workforce instead, he took a job with CN Rail. While traveling and working with CN he made lifelong friendships and memories that he loved to share with his children.

While living in Saskatoon in the late seventies, Bernie met the love of his life, Peggy Zacharias. They married on October 11, 1980, at St. Paul’s Cathedral. They welcomed their two sons, Matthew in 1983 and Michael in 1984. Bernie’s occupation with CN relocated the family to Humboldt where they found their home. Two years later they welcomed their daughter Melissa in 1988.

His love of traveling later led him on another adventure that he just could not pass up, an opportunity that allowed him and his wife Peggy to travel across the United States and Canada long-hauling RV units. The stories, memories and smiles were endless! He took great pride in this work, his red truck, and the number of kilometers they covered. Bernie retired in 2018 when his health became a concern.

Bernie and Peggy continued to reside in their home in Humboldt until Bernie’s mobility took a turn that required him to move into long-term care, after a few moves, he eventually found his new home at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt.

Bernie was a man of simple pleasures like a good cup of coffee, time spent in the garden or building new things in the garage. He loved summers camping with family and friends and golfing. He built fires to ensure everyone could feel the warmth (sometimes too much!). Bernie loved sharing jokes, talking politics, sharing photos of his grandchildren, and watching the Riders play football. He wished more than anything to be back on the golf course and to be able to drive again.

Bernie was predeceased by his parents Louis and Olga Sliva and Father-in-law Frank Zacharias.

Bernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Peggy; sons, Matthew (Sarah and Ellia) Sliva, Michael (Kelsey, Riley, and Paige) Sliva; daughter, Melissa (Seth and Eberle) Mackie; sister, Vi (Raymond) Skogen and family; brother, Larry (Cecilia) Sliva and family; and Robert (Lydia) Sliva and family. He is also survived by mother-in-law, Eva Zacharias; and brothers-in-law, Don (Judy) Zacharias and family, Wayne Zacharias and family, Jeff (Deirdre) Zacharias and family, Gord Zacharias, and Stan Zacharias.

Per Bernie’s request, a celebration of life will be held in August. In memory of Bernie, take time to enjoy your coffee and your loved ones, play a round of golf, and stop and enjoy the flowers. Memorial Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation (New Building Fund).

47 Bill Beyko Obituary
BEYKO – William “Bill” Beyko of Yorkton and formerly of the Rhein District passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the Yorkton & District Nursing home. He was 93 years of age. Bill was born on the family farm in the Rhein District on Wednesday October 1, 1930 the second child of six born to Peter and Annie (nee Manchuk) Beyko. He attended the Vionne School but his schooling was cut short due to his father becoming ill and the need for someone to look after the farm. He began farming with horses and continued to do so until tractors became affordable. Bill prospered due to his strong work ethic, his desire to succeed, and his ability to be a “Jack of All Trades”. He would tackle any job by learning the skills necessary to complete the job and would help anybody with anything such as welding, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, and even autobody work as he worked in winter for Western Autobody Shop in Kamsack. In 1960, Bill was united in Holy Matrimony to Theresa Lozinski and they were blessed with three children, Peter, Michelle, and Glenn. Bill was a dedicated father and a good provider to his children. There was many good times spent at the family cabin at Sunnyside Beach. Bill taught his boys many skills such as farming, mechanics, autobody, welding, and carpentry to name a few. Bill’s passion was travelling on holidays and he also loved to attend auction sales and pawn shops, both of which he must have attended thousands of, and distance was never an issue. He loved to chase “the deal” and to buy and sell. He had a skill to build grain trucks for resale and later older vehicles became his hobby. He loved to travel to swap meets, finding parts, and meeting people. In the early 1990’s Bill moved to Yorkton which left the sons to take over the running of the farm, but he always offered help when he was able. Bill loved the farm and always would drive out, almost on a daily basis to check on what the “boys” were working on and what they were up to. In his elderly years he didn’t give up his passion for travel as he loved the mountains, attending many dance and music festivals, picking cherries in BC, and going on numerous cruises. Bill is predeceased by his parents, Peter and Annie; his sisters, Stella, Rose, and Helen; his brother, John; and his son, Glenn. He leaves to celebrate his life, Theresa; his son, Peter (Darlene Paradis); his daughter, Michelle (Tom) Scott; his daughter-in-law, Irina; his grandchildren, Tyson, Madison, Austin, and Daniel; and numerous extended family and friends. Prayers were held on Thursday November 30, 2023 at 7:00 P.M. from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with the Rosary being prayed prior to the service beginning at 6:30 P.M. The Requiem Divine Liturgy was celebrated on Friday December 1, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. from St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church with Reverend Father Basil Malowany serving as the Celebrant with Mr. Lorne Stechyshyn serving as the Cantor and accompanied by the St. Mary’s Funeral Choir. The Crossbearer was Madison Beyko and the Epistle Lesson was read by Jason Kopan. The interment followed in the Yorkton City Cemetery with Tyson Beyko, Austin Beyko, Ernie Bodnarek, Charles Strutynski, Robert Herman, and Ian Bugera serving as the Pallbearers. Kopan’s Funeral Service is honoured to have been entrusted with funeral arrangements. www.kopans.online 306-783-0099
