Life on the farm by Peter Yacyshen

For the Yacyshen Family Reunion 1993

Life on the Yacyshen farm was a happy one. I guess because there were so many brothers and sisters to do something foolish. Like the first to run barefooted in the spring with the snow on the ground or walk on thin ice without breaking through.

Our parents were good to all of us they tried their best. We did not appreciate all that they did for us until we were on our own.

When dad went to town with horses and wagon, I would go along. He would let me drive the horses. That was something great for me.

For entertainment we played ball, hide and seek, hit the can, or ride the buggy down the hill. In winter we would slide down the hill with homemade sleds, a piece of cardboard or a piece of tin.

These were hard times, no money for clothes. But we got something new for our Christmas concert.

The crops were poor and the prices were very low. One year it hailed and the next year about 1937 the rust wiped out all the crops. But our parents were religious and would never give up. They would always say that the good Lord had a reason for all his works.

We picked berries in the summertime, raspberries, strawberries, saskatoon’s and cranberries. We had to walk 3 or 4 miles to pick berries so we would stop at the farmers place along the way for a drink of water from the well. They were always friendly and would sit and visit. The berries were canned most of the time without sugar but they were sure good in the winter.

I just remember a few years of the hard time by 1940. The war years the times were good, we could get a dollar and a half for a can of cream. We milked 8 to 10 cows, so we had a few cents which made us rich after not having any money.

    Surnames:
Coming to a new country and not being able to speak the language can create huge difficulties. One of those difficulties is the correct spelling of names on official documents. I have gone through documents of marriage, baptism, homestead applications and death certificates. These are the surnames that appear for Alex Yacyshen on those documents as provided by Sharon Protz (Yacyshen):
    Yacyshyn (1902); Jacyszyn (1902); Yaceson (1905); Yacyshen (1908); and Yacyszyn (1916).
The death certificate of Mike Yacyshen who died on or about the 15th day of October, 1913 at Oak River, Manitoba and that Alex Yacyshen will be responsible for Mike Yacyshen's debt and property. Signed by the Clerk of the Surrogate Court of the Judical District of Wynyard.
Based on this information, I will use the surname of Yacyshen for all of Alex's children and then change the surname spelling based on obituaries or other information.

A few years later a quiet and sensitive widow, Mrs. Solomeya Romeshenko, with three teenagers foresaw that it would be wiser to leave their better than average living in the Ukraine and make the move to Canada. So after much thought, consideration, and fear, they ventured into this land of opportunity. With eager enthusiasm John Romeshenko, Martha (Yachyshyn) and Lena (Martynuik) encouraged their mother to set sail. They had a better ship, faster sailing, and better food, even entertainment, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. However, mother Solomeya was playfully anticipating the unknown; but like George, with deep faith, she relied open the "above" to look after them too.
