Obituary for Cynthia Hope "Cindy" Yacyshen

YACYSHEN: It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Cynthia "Cindy" Hope Yacyshen on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg. Born May 13, 1968 in Brandon, Cindy attended school at Valleyview Elementary, Vincent Massey Jr. High School as well as Vincent Massey Sr. High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) from the University of Manitoba in 1991, and received a National Certificate in Fundraising Management. Cindy worked for the Manitoba Theater Centre as a Campaign Officer from 1992 - 1995, then at Brandon University as Sr. Development Officer (Institutional Advancement Department) from 1996 - 2009 before becoming a sponsorship coordinator for the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba from 2011-2012 and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba. Cindy was passionate about wildlife and enjoyed horseback riding. Left to cherish Cindy's memory are her mother Helga Yacyshen; brother Wayne Yacyshen; nephew Brendan as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins and very good friend Holly McKee. She was predeceased by her father Zeno Yacyshen; twin brothers Todd and Trevor Yacyshen and her maternal and paternal grandparents. The Funeral Service was held at Memories Chapel on Friday, November 23, 2012. Rev. Rick Wells officiated. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. The family wishes to thank all of those people who have helped them through these difficult times. YACYSHEN: The death of Zeno Yacyshen of Brandon occurred Friday, September 3, 1999 at the Assiniboine Centre with his family at his side. Funeral service was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 with Rev. Rick Wells of Grand Valley Community Church officiating. Interment took place at the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Zeno may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2.

Yatsyshyn Oleksa (Jacyszyn Alexius) was born in about 1847. 15.10.1871 at the age of 24 he married 18-year old Katheryna Stetsiuk, p.Stephan and Yevdokia Nazaranko (Cartharina Steciuk, p.Stephanus et Eudocia Nazaranko). They lived in the building No 6-SS, and had at least 10 children:
o Yatsyshyn Anastasia (Jacyszyn Anastasia) 3.03.1872 DOB. 2.09.1894 she married 31-year old Mykola Hrabchak, p.Vasyl and Anna Fialkovska (Nicolaus Hrabczak, p.Basilius et Anna Fialkowska). He was from the building No 97-SN. Before the marriage, he was the widower after Maria Momotiuk. They lived in the building No 97-SN and had at least 5 children:

I should mention that the first time, 17.11.1889 at the age of 26, Mykola Hrabchak married 15-year old Maria Momotiuk, p.Mykola and Katheryna Kaskiv (Maria Momotiuk, p.Nicolaus et Catharina Kaskow). They lived in the building No 97- SN, and had at least one daughter:

Oleksa married Katheryna (Cartharina) Stetsiuk (Steciuk) on 15 Oct 1871. Katheryna (daughter of Stephan (Stephanus) Stetsiuk (Steciuk) and Yevdokia (Eudocia) Nazaranka) was born in 1853 in Skala-Podilska, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine, (Skala Stara Bldg 6); died on 29 Nov 1927; was buried on 1 Dec 1927 in Dobrowody Saskatchewan, Canada. Stetsiuk Katheryna (Steciuk Catharina) was born in about 1853. There is no entry about her birth. In 1871, at the age of 18 she married Oleksa Yatsyshyn (please see the information above).

Surnames:
Coming to a new country and not being able to speak the language can create huge difficulties. One of those difficulties is the correct spelling of names on official documents. I have gone through documents of marriage, baptism, homestead applications and death certificates. These are the surnames that appear for Alex Yacyshen on those documents as provided by Sharon Protz (Yacyshen):
Yacyshyn (1902); Jacyszyn (1902); Yaceson (1905); Yacyshen (1908); and Yacyszyn (1916).
The death certificate of Mike Yacyshen who died on or about the 15th day of October, 1913 at Oak River, Manitoba and that Alex Yacyshen will be responsible for Mike Yacyshen's debt and property. Signed by the Clerk of the Surrogate Court of the Judical District of Wynyard.
Based on this information, I will use the surname of Yacyshen for all of Alex's children and then change the surname spelling based on obituaries or other information.
