- Bernie Ray Sliva
August 22, 1957 – June 24, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandpa, Bernie Ray Sliva.
Bernie was born on August 22, 1957, to Louis and Olga (Yachyshen) Sliva in Canora, SK. He passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt, SK on June 24, 2024.
Bernie was raised on a family farm close to Rama, SK with his sister and two brothers. After completing high school in Sturgis, SK he was accepted into the University of Saskatchewan to pursue education in engineering. After deciding to join the workforce instead, he took a job with CN Rail. While traveling and working with CN he made lifelong friendships and memories that he loved to share with his children.
While living in Saskatoon in the late seventies, Bernie met the love of his life, Peggy Zacharias. They married on October 11, 1980, at St. Paul’s Cathedral. They welcomed their two sons, Matthew in 1983 and Michael in 1984. Bernie’s occupation with CN relocated the family to Humboldt where they found their home. Two years later they welcomed their daughter Melissa in 1988.
His love of traveling later led him on another adventure that he just could not pass up, an opportunity that allowed him and his wife Peggy to travel across the United States and Canada long-hauling RV units. The stories, memories and smiles were endless! He took great pride in this work, his red truck, and the number of kilometers they covered. Bernie retired in 2018 when his health became a concern.
Bernie and Peggy continued to reside in their home in Humboldt until Bernie’s mobility took a turn that required him to move into long-term care, after a few moves, he eventually found his new home at St. Mary’s Villa in Humboldt.
Bernie was a man of simple pleasures like a good cup of coffee, time spent in the garden or building new things in the garage. He loved summers camping with family and friends and golfing. He built fires to ensure everyone could feel the warmth (sometimes too much!). Bernie loved sharing jokes, talking politics, sharing photos of his grandchildren, and watching the Riders play football. He wished more than anything to be back on the golf course and to be able to drive again.
Bernie was predeceased by his parents Louis and Olga Sliva and Father-in-law Frank Zacharias.
Bernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Peggy; sons, Matthew (Sarah and Ellia) Sliva, Michael (Kelsey, Riley, and Paige) Sliva; daughter, Melissa (Seth and Eberle) Mackie; sister, Vi (Raymond) Skogen and family; brother, Larry (Cecilia) Sliva and family; and Robert (Lydia) Sliva and family. He is also survived by mother-in-law, Eva Zacharias; and brothers-in-law, Don (Judy) Zacharias and family, Wayne Zacharias and family, Jeff (Deirdre) Zacharias and family, Gord Zacharias, and Stan Zacharias.
Per Bernie’s request, a celebration of life will be held in August. In memory of Bernie, take time to enjoy your coffee and your loved ones, play a round of golf, and stop and enjoy the flowers. Memorial Donations in Bernie’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Villa Foundation (New Building Fund).
