A few years later a quiet and sensitive widow, Mrs. Solomeya Romeshenko, with three teenagers foresaw that it would be wiser to leave their better than average living in the Ukraine and make the move to Canada. With eager enthusiasm John Romeshenko, Martha (Yachyshyn) and Lena (Martynuik) encouraged their mother to set sail. They had a better ship, faster sailing, and better food, even entertainment, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. However, mother Solomeya was playfully anticipating the unknown; but like George, with deep faith, she relied open the "above" to look after them too.

    Notes:

NELLIE NOVAL Peacefully in the arms of Stan, Ken, Sharon and Roy, we the family announce the passing of Nellie Noval with profound sadness and heavy hearts on December 25, 2004 at the age of 86 years at Kildonan Personal Care Centre. Our prayers were answered that Mom spend one more Christmas with us. Her memory will be cherished by her devoted husband of 63 years, Stanley; son Ken; daughter Sharon (Roy Naurocki); grandchildren, Kristofer, Amanda, Kelly; great-grandson Joshua and goddaughter Florence Swereda. She also leaves to mourn brother Mike Yacyshen and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Marta and Sverko Yacyshen; brothers, John, Metro, William and Peter; sisters, Anne Qwechuk and Lena Antoniuk. Nellie was born on March 5, 1918 in Norquay, SK. Here, Nellie's unconditional love for family, deep religious faith and the Ukrainian culture took roots. This would sustain her throughout her entire life to her final days. Along with her five brothers and two sisters, Nellie attended North Willow Grove School in Norquay where she had many happy memories with her siblings and often shared them with her family in later years. As many young women did at that time, Nellie left the farm and travelled to Winnipeg to seek employment. Nellie's first job as a housekeeper enabled her to save enough for her later career. Nellie graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse from St. Boniface Hospital. Her nursing career allowed her to remain in Winnipeg, where she met many new friends and attended the popular dances at that time. At one of these dances she met a young man who later became her soulmate and devoted loving husband. After dating for a year, Nellie and Stan were married on January 9, 1942, by Fr. Bozyk in St. Anne's Ukrainian Catholic Church. After the birth of her two children, Ken and Sharon, Nellie remained at home to care for her family. Nellie was a wonderful homemaker who loved cooking, sewing, gardening and visiting with their many friends. As Nellie's children grew up she returned to work at the Marlborough Hotel where she made many new friendships. Nellie and Stan shared the love of travel. In early years, frequent visits to Gilbert Plains, Norquay, Banff and Chilliwack were made. In later years, the travel grew. In 1975 Nellie and Stan began their adventure of travel which took them to the Holy Land, later England, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Rome, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Egypt, Pompeii, Mediterranean, United States, Mexico, Alaska and all of Canada. In 1992 Nellie, along with her family returned to her roots, Norquay, and the Yacyshen Family reunion. Nellie's deep religious faith was present throughout her life. Her love of the rosary was evident to the moment of her passing. Nellie and Stan attended daily mass at St. Mary's Cathedral, was a member of the Franciscan Friary, a devoted supporter of the Marian Hour, a member of the Catholic Women's League, a Misericordia Hospital Volunteer, and an original March of Dimes Mother. For the last four years, Nellie was a resident at Kildonan Personal Care Centre, where she was treated with gentleness, care, compassion and dignity. The family wishes to thank K.P.C.C., especially the 2nd floor staff who made her final days comforting and peaceful. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 29 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Cathedral, 353 St. Mary Ave. with Rev. Fr. Micheal Koroluk officiating. Private family interment at Assumption Cemetery. Nellie's pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Kristofer, Amanda and Kelly Noval and nephews, Jarvis Swereda, Norman Mikoluff and Terrance Demchuk. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nellie's memory to the Marian Hour Rosary, Box 235, 971 Corydon Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3M 3S7. Mom, we thank you for everything you gave us, your patience, understanding, your kindness and most of all your unconditional love. We know you are just a thought away. Love never dies. Those that leave us don't go away. They walk beside us day by day. VICHNAYA PAMYAT ETERNAL MEMORY KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 956-2193

Life on the farm by Peter Yacyshen

For the Yacyshen Family Reunion 1993

Life on the Yacyshen farm was a happy one. I guess because there were so many brothers and sisters to do something foolish. Like the first to run barefooted in the spring with the snow on the ground or walk on thin ice without breaking through.

Our parents were good to all of us they tried their best. We did not appreciate all that they did for us until we were on our own.

When dad went to town with horses and wagon, I would go along. He would let me drive the horses. That was something great for me.

For entertainment we played ball, hide and seek, hit the can, or ride the buggy down the hill. In winter we would slide down the hill with homemade sleds, a piece of cardboard or a piece of tin.

These were hard times, no money for clothes. But we got something new for our Christmas concert.

The crops were poor and the prices were very low. One year it hailed and the next year about 1937 the rust wiped out all the crops. But our parents were religious and would never give up. They would always say that the good Lord had a reason for all his works.

We picked berries in the summertime, raspberries, strawberries, saskatoon’s and cranberries. We had to walk 3 or 4 miles to pick berries so we would stop at the farmers place along the way for a drink of water from the well. They were always friendly and would sit and visit. The berries were canned most of the time without sugar but they were sure good in the winter.

I just remember a few years of the hard time by 1940. The war years the times were good, we could get a dollar and a half for a can of cream. We milked 8 to 10 cows, so we had a few cents which made us rich after not having any money.

    ELLEN'S OBITUARY
Ellen Lukey passed away at the Rocky View Hospital, Calgary, AB, on January 4, 2016. Although the family is saddened to announce Ellen’s passing, they also rejoice in looking forward to the resurrection of the dead as in Revelations 21:4 – “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” Ellen was born the fifth child of seven girls blessed to John and Alexandria (Twerdochlib) Romashenko of the Hyas District, SK. She attended Ulric school and achieved one year of high school by correspondence. Her older siblings taught her how to crochet and on the farm this became a favourite winter pastime. On November 10, 1946, Ellen married Sam Lukey at the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church, south of Norquay, SK. For a short time, they lived with Sam’s parents. When Ellen’s parents retired to Canora, Sam and Ellen moved to the homestead. God blessed them with 38 years of married life. Together, they attended church regularly. Ellen had a great love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the church. She would say her Rosary daily and in earlier years would also attend daily Divine Liturgy. Ellen’s hobbies included playing cards and bingo, reading, and crocheting. She crocheted tablecloths, doilies, and altar linens, many of which her family and friends enjoy to this today. As a young boy, he attended the North Willow Grove School and helped on the family farm with his parents and brothers. Bill loved the farm and was always very interested in grain farming, caring for his animals and riding his horse Bobby. He enjoyed family gatherings and he hosted many family events, reunions and barbeques at the farm. Anyone who visited the farm was usually recruited to help the days work whether it be repairs, haying or field work. Bill trained many a nephew in the chores of the farm. When the work was done, the trip to town on Saturday night to pick up supplies and socialize, was an event to look forward to. In the summer, Bill would announce that after church a trip to Crystal Lake was in order and as nieces and nephews we loved to hear that! Bill had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke. A highlight of his day was Coffee Time , where a full lunch was enjoyed by whoever stopped by the farm. In January 1966, Bill married Ann Stecyk in Saskatoon, SK, and welcomed her and her son John into his life where they enjoyed many happy years on the farm. John was the focus of his life and learned many skills from his dad as they farmed together. Retirement was spent in Norquay where he enjoyed the visits from friends and family who stopped in. Bill moved to the Norquay Lodge, where he remained until his passing. His love of his faith and his church were always the center of his life. Bill was predeceased by his parents, George and Lena; his wife, Anne; his eight brothers: Paul, Andrew, John, Mike, Fr. Ron, Monty, Tony and Emil and his four sisters: Anne, Mary Furmaniuk, Nell Nahachewsky and Sonia Mcleod. He is lovingly remembered by his son, John Martyniuk of Norquay, SK; his brother, Ted (Ollie) Martyniuk of Parksville, B.C.; his sister, Bernadette Sorochuk of Norquay, SK and numerous nieces and nephews. VERA'S OBITUARY
With broken hearts and deepest sorrow, the family of the late Vera Mydan, beloved wife of the late Onufry Mydan, announce her passing at Regina, SK, on June 19, 2019, at the age of 92 years.
Vera was born in Norquay, SK, on May 15, 1927, to John and Ann (Cherewyk) Huska, the first of 11 children, 6 girls and 5 boys. At the age of 17, Vera was married to Onufry Mydan.
Vera and Onufry lived on the farm until 1959, when they moved to Norquay and built a service station and restaurant. With the help of Johnny and Luba, they continued farming and raised cattle. In 1967, they sold the business and moved to the outskirts of Norquay and continued farming until their retirement, at which time they moved to Canora, SK.
After Onufry passed away (2001), Vera continued living in Canora and at the age of 89 she moved to Selo Gardens Regina, where she continued to reside until her passing. While at Selo Gardens, bingo and cards remained her favorite past time and she was always the last to leave any function - to help tidy up. Her door was always open, and she always greeted everyone with open arms and a friendly smile. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love with family and friends who will miss her hop polka dance lessons. Even while at Wascana Grace Hospice, where she was very well taken care of, through her pain and discomfort, she still shared her wonderful sense of humor.
Vera’s constant love for her nieces and nephews and friends made her family proud to call her their loving mom. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. VICHNAYA PAMIAT- MEMORY ETERNAL
Vera was predeceased by her husband, Onufry; parents, John and Ann; brothers, Ben and Joe and sister, Luba Shuya.
Vera is survived by her daughter, Diana (Merv) Koshman; son, Gerald (Janet Bzdel); four grandchildren: Kevin (Irene), Kelly (Jody), Shawn and Sage (Blair); seven great-grandchildren; four sisters: Nadia Ewachow, Sylvia (Garth) Bishop, Pauline Sielski and Yvonne (Ned) Derkach; three brothers: Nick, Dan (Arlene) and David Huska; as well numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
A Prayer Service was held at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, June 23, 2019, from St. Athanasius Byzantine - Ukrainian Catholic Church, 55 McMurchy Ave., Regina, SK, with Rev. Fr. Vasyl Tymishak presiding. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 24, 2019, from Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Canora, SK, with Very Rev. Fr. Joakim Rac, as celebrant. When asked for her recipes, she would say, "I just put in a little of this and little of that!" Romy Huska

Romy Huska passed away on January 5, 2003.

He died peacefully in his sleep at home, after a two-year fight with cancer.

Romy was born on October 17, 1938 in Norquay, Saskatchewan. In 1958 he moved to B.C. and in 1959 joined the RCAF as an airborne electronics technician.

He was stationed all over Canada before going overseas to France and then to Germany. He loved travelling and attending all the European car races, Le Mans, Brands Hatch, Nurnburg Ring, etc. He met his English wife in “Germany and they were married in England in 1968.

They came to Winnipeg in 1969 and Romy left the armed forces in 1971, moving back to B.C.

For the next 30 years he worked in the sawmill industry, first as a purchasing agent and later as a maintenance planner. For the past 12 years he worked for Lignum Ltd. Romy had a thirst for knowledge and was interested in everything, he loved to travel, camp and pursue his hobbies of photography, building remote air controlled air planes, exploring the back country and listening to CBC. His interests in music, film, world history and current events made him a formidable opponent on board games.

He was happiest raising his two children and most of his spare time was spent with them. His love of flying, sailing and travelling was shared by his family.

Romy’s community involvement was extensive, having been president of the Royal Canadian Legion in Chetwynd and spending several years within the cadet movement. He was commanding officer of both Air Cadets in Chetwynd and later of Sea Cadets in Williams Lake.

Romy was a man of few words, he worked diligently and always saw things through to the end, no matter how difficult they were. He loved his family and he was happiest out exploring with them or travelling. The ocean was a favourite place for Romy and it was here he indulged in his passion for kite flying. He spent hours on the beach with his children with many different varieties of kites, with the well-known grin on his face.He was looking forward to taking his grandchildren to the beach as well, but it was not to be. He fell sick in January 2001 and fought a great fight with many varied treatments and never once complained or lost faith, he remained positive to the end.

On January 4, 2003 Romy had the joy of naming his first granddaughter on hearing of her safe arrival in Powell River and died 18 hours later, happy with the knowledge both his daughter and granddaughter were doing well.

He leaves to mourn: Pauline, his wife of 34 years, daughter Jennilyn (Adam Robbie) and newly born granddaughter, Calli Romy Robbie, his son, Colin and mother, Stella of Chase. Also left to mourn are nine siblings: Angie (Joe Kohlen) and Pat (Connie of Williams Lake; Victoria Brears of Grande Prairie, Steven (Judy), Marie (Les Murray) and Terry (Linda) of Quesnel, Theresa (Bruce Scott) in Chetwynd, Patricia (Brian David) in Chase and Ivan (Laura) in Vancouver. Also numerous nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and many very special friends.

He was predeceased by his father George Huska in 1991.

    Rest in Peace Romy.
